The story behind the words

Beginning in 1986, people lined up on Sundays to meet the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. He offered blessings and advice, and gave visitors a dollar to pass on to charity.

David Roytman draws on this story for In God We Trust. The words printed on the dollar become the lettering on the collection: a reminder of faith and the good one person can do for another.

The dollar's inscription is part of the designer's inspiration. The historical account of the Rebbe's practice explains his wish that a meeting should benefit another person. Read Chabad's account of Sunday Dollars.
