Gifts for a Rabbi or Teacher

For the person who taught you something about your tradition.

A rabbi, a Hebrew school teacher, a Torah study partner, a mentor in Jewish learning. The right gift for this person is one that recognises the relationship without making it transactional. Books are obvious. Wine is appropriate but disposable. Money is wrong. A designed piece that they will wear and remember is the format that does the work.

Couture pieces fit because they are contemporary, well-made, and rooted in the same tradition the teacher is rooted in. The piece reads as a thank you that took thought rather than time.

For a rabbi

Letterform Hoodie — Men ($220)

The Hebrew letterform composition is the piece's whole point. For someone whose life is the alphabet (study, prayer, the weekly Torah portion), the gift reads as recognition of the work.

Lion Spirit T-Shirt — Men ($90)

The Lion of Judah, given to a teacher of Jewish tradition, recognises the lineage they continue.

For a Hebrew school or teacher of children

Denim Cap — Hamsa ($90)

A cap is the appropriate lighter gift for an end-of-year teacher thank-you. The Hamsa is the symbol of protection, which is what teachers do for the children they teach.

A note on appropriateness

A rabbi gift should not be ostentatious. The $90 to $220 range is correct for almost any rabbi-student relationship. Anything larger starts to read transactional. If the rabbi has been the personal officiant at a major lifecycle event, a slightly more substantial gift is appropriate, but the symbol still matters more than the price tag.
